The Origin

Master Toyotaro Miyazaki

The man who carried Shotokan Karate from Tokyo to America — and whose legacy flows directly into every class at PA Shotojuku.

In the 1960s, Master Toyotaro Miyazaki left Tokyo, Japan and came to the United States to do something that had rarely been done before: transplant the full tradition of Shotokan Karate — its techniques, its philosophy, its culture — into Western soil.

Together with his senior student Shihan Kai Leung, Master Miyazaki co-founded the International Shotokai Federation, headquartered in New York. The federation's headquarter dojo — The Shotojuku — became the living center of this lineage in the United States.

Over the decades, the International Shotokai has branched into associated dojos throughout the U.S. and the world, each one carrying the same unbroken chain of instruction back to Miyazaki's original teaching.

“PA Shotojuku is the only authorized representative of the International Shotokai Federation in Northeast Pennsylvania.”
